I agree to the fact that our individual sexuality has evolved. I also believe that people still hold negative comments about the roles and sexuality of women, and that is perfectly displayed in a previous comment. This is why it is hard for women to openly discuss the topic of sexuality. Women in the views of men has evolved to a point but there are still many thoughts that are still negative, (like women are here to entertain men), I find that no one should judge, and until these views are gone, women will continued to be raped, and battered for what men think they are, and until then we are still unable to openly talk about our sexuality, and feelings that go along with it.

"Dr Ghoshal".

Seems to me you're taking an innocent discussion about something very interesting and important, and willfully placing your own negative interpretation of the role women (sometimes) play in different societies, being subjected to or of their own accord (for whatever reason), in order to put forth your own seemingly stifled and outdated take on modern life and the role women actually have in it.

Sexuality plays a very important role in life, and how male & female (not to forget about A-Sexuals, Gay & Lesbian) experience each other is in fact a very important discussion for this platform, given that most of the people who visit here believe in evolution. Yes, our individual sexuality has evolved, would you not agree ?

Your lack of actually engaging in the topic being discussed while at the same time pushing a negative viewpoint of women and how they're viewed in modern society, says nothing about women's sexuality, but a lot about you. Would you deny women the right to have sexual freedom? It's exactly these types of discussions that NEED to take place, in order for all the evils you speak of to be eradicated. Lest we abandon the pursuit of knowledge and think of sex & sexuality as dirty and disgusting. Then you can welcome us all back to the Dark Ages.

Then enjoy it Mr. Ostman, and leave people like us alone with our old ideas. Ignore the wastage of womanhood in promotion of commodities (irrespective of their qualities)in almost all countries including where you live. Let more women who are free to choose, take up the bright career of modelling and let the bs's like physics, chemistry, medicine, sociology etc. be chosen by their male counterparts. By the way, Mr Ostman, how many men are raped in your country? Would you please compare the number with that of the women suffering from this terrible experience?

Dr. Ghoshal,
The material on which the book "Why Women Have Sex" is based was provided anonymously and freely by women. The book is not intended to 'titillate' anyone, but to provide insightful information and provoke discussions. As long as sex remains a taboo subject for public discussions, men and women will continue to remain ignorant about each others' sexuality and pass on the silly and potentially dangerous attitude to sex to the next generation.

Dr. Ghoshal.

What a load of bs! It may very well be that to men *like you* a book like this will principally provide titillation. Either way, it is a book for the layman, and it is based on science. I suggest you take your sensibilities elsewhere.

Oh, and women are not *meant* for entertaining men. Some of them may entertain men, but they are free to choose what they want to do. At least where I live.

In our country, the Hindu marriage includes a rite named "Kanyadaan". It means "Offering of the Daughter". During the rite, the father(or any senior relative) of the bride touches the knee of the bridegroom of his son's age and says, "Please oblige me by accepting this maid ornamented with all kinds of jewelery". In your society I find the use of bare bodies of women being used to attract customers towards different commodities. We are also following your footsteps nowadays. Women all over the world are trained to dress themselves up with attractive garments and jeweleries to get attention of men. From India through China to America, it is still grossly a male-dominated world, where women are still meant for entertaining men. I am neither a woman nor a feminist by definition, but the dilapidated state of womanhood even in this days of democracy really hurts me. I cannot appreciate a topic like "Why Women Have Sex" in a highly rational magazine like the Skeptic. It only appears to me as another topic which a particular group of men would like to enjoy and in their discussion, the different sexual attitudes of women will principally provide titillation. Even in the ancient sexual literature written by Vatsayana under the title "Kama Sutra", there was a balance in the discussion of sexual behaviours of both the male and female partners. Such unbalanced topics probably do not deserve a place in such a platform.

Nice review by Ms. Bekiempis of an intriguing-sounding book. I'm sending this for her (and anyone who clearly cares about the language as much as she does). What she means to say is that the book is distinctive, not distinct. Everything is distinct - from everything else - and when that word is used alone, it usually has the sense of "noticeable" or "pronounced", as in "She has a distinct accent" or "He has a distinct limp." "Distinctive" means something like "standing out from the crowd," which is what Ms. Bekiempis meant to say about the book.
