To may utter amazement, Dr. Sagan wrote me back, thanking me and encouraging my scientific endeavors, also stating that the "worst part of being ill was the exhaustion and lack of energy, which he said was extremely unusual for him." He also stated that he had "confidence he would beat this thing." I will never forget him taking the time to write me, given the challenges he faced at the most difficult time of his life. By any measure you choose, Dr. Sagan's life was a "milestone" for the human existence.
