MARION KILGOUR is a mechanical engineer, and a regular contributor to the pan-Canadian blog Skeptic North. She also works to promote critical thinking and scientific literacy through local skeptical activism in Edmonton, Alberta. Marion especially wishes to encourage girls to consider science or technology-based careers, and is involved in the University of Alberta’s Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science and Technology (WISEST) project.
One resource that inspires Marion is Skepticality — the Official Podcast of Skeptic magazine. “Skepticality has been on my list of favourite podcasts ever since I was introduced to the idea of skepticism as its own movement.” Marion is concerned that pseudoscientific beliefs persist despite the excellent resources available — from publications like Skeptic to skeptical blogs and podcasts — and despite the efforts of educators to deliver a pro-science message to the public.
And yet, while she is continually surprised at the things people believe with little to no proof, Marion is also very optimistic. The skeptical community has made tremendous strides in recent years, and that forward momentum is only increasing.
